John, there’s been a lot of news since the election, but we want to make sure you didn’t miss this bombshell:

Philadelphia’s voter turnout plummeted 33% from 2020 levels this election and reached its lowest share of Pennsylvania’s vote in two decades. Had the city followed the statewide average of 22%, 84,000 more votes would have been cast.

Make no mistake. This is no natural or random variation — these drops were the sharpest in historically disenfranchised and neglected communities of color and immigrant communities.

This shows exactly why our work is so important. Overcoming centuries of suppression and neglect takes serious investment and year-round work. Can you chip in $10 today to help us expand the electorate to reflect our demographically changing population?

It’s not all bad news, though, John. As the article mentions, both Philly’s suburbs and Allegheny County, both of which were a part of our centered regions in 2022, actually increased their shares of votes cast in the state.

Where we invest in the year-round work it takes to expand the electorate, it pays off. NPP will expand our efforts to include Philadelphia in 2023.

John, the takeaways from this news are clear. The future of our state depends on engaging historically disenfranchised communities — and in just our first full year of work, we’ve proven our ability to do it. Will you donate $10 right now to help us keep expanding Pennsylvania’s electorate and our staff?

In solidarity,

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
