Get Ready for Governor Holcomb's
State of the State
Looking Back on 2017
Good evening!

This Tuesday, Jan. 14, Governor Eric Holcomb will deliver his fourth State of the State Address, the final one of his first term.

Eric is Putting People First, and has been since day one of his administration. Of course, a leader doesn’t just give speeches -- a leader acts, and looking back on the previous three State of the State addresses he’s given, it’s quite clear that the governor says what he means and follows through with action.

In these days leading up to the 2020 State of the State, we wanted to take a look back on some of the goals the governor set in previous addresses and the results he’s achieved for Hoosiers. Let's start with 2017.

First State of the State Address: January 17, 2017:

Goal: “While we can take genuine pride in being ‘The Crossroads of America,’ roads need upkeep, and Hoosiers and Hoosier businesses require stronger connections than ever before.”
* Result: The governor created Next Level Roads ([link removed][UNIQID]) , Indiana’s long-term, fully-funded infrastructure program that will maintain and improve Indiana’s roads and bridges for a quarter century.

Goal: “(We must) continue to manage our finances with the discipline we’ve shown over the past 12 years… that’s why I support a balanced budget amendment!”
* Result: Balanced budget amendment ratified in Indiana’s ([link removed][UNIQID]) constitution in 2018.

Goal: “We’ll grow our 21^st Century economy by investing in and nurturing entrepreneurship, innovation and technology pursuits.”
* Result: Creation of Next Level Fund ([link removed][UNIQID]) , $250 million to support Indiana’s entrepreneurial community ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

Goal: “I’m asking you to authorize funding to strengthen our connection to our…world… and incentivize more direct flights to better connection Hoosiers to… international markets.”
* Result: Indiana’s first nonstop international flight, from Indy to Paris, took off in May 2018 ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

Goal: “We’re going to attack (drug addiction) on all fronts: prevention, treatment and enforcement.”
* Result: Overdose deaths have declined 12.9% ([link removed][UNIQID]) in Indiana.

Goal: “We’ll honor our veterans and their service by exempting their pensions from state income tax.”
* Result: Veteran pensions will be Indiana state income tax free by 2024 ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

That’s just a sampling of the results Governor Holcomb promised and delivered from his first State of the State speech in 2017. You can read and view his first one at this link ([link removed][UNIQID]) . Tomorrow, we'll take a look at Governor Holcomb’s 2018 State of the State address.
