Each year, it claims the lives of more than 45,000 Americans each year. And it’s become the number one cause of death for children. Tackling this complex epidemic requires a number of solutions — and one of the most important is banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Medical professionals understand the lethality of these weapons intimately. Trauma surgeons, emergency medicine doctors, and pediatricians see first-hand what assault rifles do to their patients: They blow holes through their bodies and their liquefy organs. They cause damage that leaves children identifiable only by DNA kits, their blood-splattered clothes, or the shoes they wore as they ran in fear for their lives.
It's because assault rifles are weapons of war, designed to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. These tools of destrcution cannot remain on our streets – we have to change this and that’s why I’m reaching out today, John. Brady spearheaded an open letter to the Senate, signed by medical professionals from across the country and demanding that the U.S. Senate ban assault weapons before the end of the 2022 session – less than a month away.
