Weekend Reading

Dear John,
The human rights of migrants are sacrosanct. U.S. policies should reflect this. From today (International Human Rights Day) through Dec. 18 (International Migrants Day), AFSC, partners, and communities across the U.S. are taking action to ensure the right to migrate is respected for all people. Learn more about our week of action. [link removed] And please join us for our national webinar on Dec. 12 (8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT). Register today. [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Last chance to sign our petition: Restore the right to asylum: [link removed] For the past two years, Title 42 has blocked most migrants from seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Under a recent court order, this inhumane policy will terminate at the end of this month. But now, the Biden administration is considering new measures that could bar asylum seekers. This week, we’re delivering thousands of petition signatures to the White House to demand the Biden administration uphold the right to asylum for all. If you haven’t already, add your name today! Victory: Stopping police from using killer robots: [link removed] After San Francisco lawmakers voted to allow police to use lethally armed robots, outraged community members and organizations—including AFSC—spoke out. The protests, widespread media coverage, and public pressure worked. Several lawmakers changed their positions. And in a complete reversal, the Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to ban police robots from using deadly force. (Mission Local)

New podcast: Artists making change in the Middle East and North Africa: [link removed] Earlier this year, AFSC brought together activists and artists from the Middle East and North Africa to make new connections, talk about their experiences, and support each other in working for peace with justice. In this limited podcast series, “Assembly,” [link removed] we talk with participants about how art can transform our everyday lives. Our first episode features Emad Hajjaj, a cartoonist from Jordan. Listen now. [link removed]

Selective Service System won't be expanded to women: [link removed] For the past two years, some members of Congress have tried to expand the military draft registration requirement to women. But AFSC, partners, and supporters like you pushed back, urging elected officials to end the draft instead of expanding it. And this week, negotiators of the annual defense authorization bill scrapped expansion plans. Now, it's time to reinvigorate the call to end the Selective Service System entirely! Read more from AFSC’s Tori Bateman. [link removed]

New AFSC fellowship focuses on opposing racism and apartheid: [link removed] AFSC is grateful for the generosity of an anonymous donor who has helped create the Stephen McNeil Fellowship. Over the next two years, the fellow will help us organize and lead a new coalition of "Apartheid-Free Communities." These groups will pledge to be "apartheid-free” by withdrawing all support from Israeli apartheid.

Make your tax-deductible gift by Dec. 31: [link removed] We depend on generous supporters like you to fund our worldwide work. If you have already made your gift, thank you! If you haven’t yet contributed, please help us build a more just and peaceful world with a donation today!

Be well and take care
