Over the last decade, the world has seen a dramatic rise in public protests within repressive authoritarian regimes.
In 2021, viral videos denouncing state repression and an economic crisis in Cuba drew tens of thousands to the largest mass protests in decades. In 2020, Belarusians donned in red and white filled the streets to express outrage over the deeply fraudulent presidential election.

Freedom House Joins The Resisting Authoritarian Pressure Cohort

As part of the Year of Action initiated by President Biden’s Summit for Democracy, Freedom House has joined a cohort that aims to tackle the rising threat of authoritarian pressure. The Resisting Authoritarian Pressure (RAP) cohort, co-run by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Freedom House, and the Alliance of Democracies (AoD), aims to build resilience to authoritarian coercion and offer support to democrats and human rights defenders working in non-democracies.
2023 Mark Palmer Prize Nominations
