Dear John,
Over the last decade, the world has seen a dramatic rise in public protests within repressive authoritarian regimes.
In 2021, viral videos denouncing state repression and an economic crisis in Cuba drew tens of thousands to the largest mass protests in decades. In 2020, Belarusians donned in red and white filled the streets to express outrage over the deeply fraudulent presidential election.
These protests and others are featured in a new report from Freedom House that explores how protest movements emerge in repressive environments.
For activists, even failed movements can serve as lessons in how to build a broad social campaign capable of staying one step ahead of state repression.
