With or without Congress, there's plenty to fight for

*********************
Dear Friend,

With the balance of power in Congress shifting, it’s unlikely we’ll see major legislation in the next two years.

Fortunately, we’re ready for this moment. Over the last two years, supporters like you have taken action on more than a hundred different issues — and the vast majority of those had nothing to do with Congress. That’s because the agency rulemakings and comment periods associated with them are where so many of the big decisions are made that will actually determine whether the air you breathe is clean or whether or not an endangered species will have enough habitat to thrive.

This isn’t to say Congress isn’t important — it is — but it’s a reminder that the executive branch can still do a whole lot. In fact, executive action will be the primary means for President Biden to live up to his promises. On climate, social justice, biodiversity, and everything else in between, he’ll have to show his commitment to change directly. The days of blaming Congress and delaying government action in the name of political expediency are over.

We’re going to need your help to make the next two years of executive action more impactful than the last. You can do that today by clicking here to take all the actions below.

Tell the EPA to ban leaded aviation gasoline

While the use of leaded gasoline in most cars was banned 25 years ago, leaded aviation gasoline is still used in nearly 170,000 piston-engine aircraft across 20,000 airports. EPA estimates that emissions from these airplanes account for about 70% of lead released into the atmosphere. Send a letter to the EPA today to advocate for regulating this common source of lead pollution!

Support green energy for Puerto

In what has become the new normal in Puerto Rico after a storm, millions were powerless after Hurricane Fiona overwhelmed the archipelago's fragile centralized electrical grid. With transmission lines dead and generators shut down, only the relatively few Puerto Ricans with rooftop solar and battery storage were able to maintain power to keep electronics charged and medicine and food unspoiled. Urge Secretary Granholm and Puerto Rico Governor Pierluisi to chart a different course.

Protect the endangered Gulf of Mexico whale from extinction

The Gulf of Mexico whale can be as big as a railroad boxcar and as heavy as a typical fire truck and is the only large whale species that lives year-round in the waters of the United States. And because of fossil fuel exploration development and other human activities, it is also the most endangered large whale species in the world. Only about 50 of these rare whales remain. Join us in urging the Biden administration to protect the endangered Gulf of Mexico whale from extinction.

Finalize protections for the Thompson Divide

The Thompson Divide is an essential part of Colorado’s National Forest lands that contains some of the last fully intact forest ecosystems in the state and provides important habitat for wildlife, unparalleled backcountry recreation, and clean water for people in local communities. It encompasses a dozen different roadless areas but is threatened with potential oil and gas development and a lack of permanent protection. Tell the Biden administration to move forward with its plan to protect the Thompson Divide.
