Do you know why we celebrate Universal Children’s Day on November 20, John?

It’s because on that date in 1959, the U.N. General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of the Child. On the same day in 1989, that document was adapted to form the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, which today is the most universally accepted human rights treaty in history.

Today, the idea that children have rights is widely accepted, but in 1919, when Eglantyne Jebb founded Save the Children and first drafted the Declaration on the Rights of the Child, it was revolutionary. The Declaration boldly asserted that all children have a right to food, health care, education and protection from harm, and it put the onus on governments and people around the world to work together to protect these rights.

As we approach this important anniversary and what is now known as Universal Children’s Day, we are sharing an exciting opportunity for you to uplift and support children around the world: Today, you can sign our card to send your message of support for children in need this holiday season.
