Do you know why we celebrate Universal Children’s Day on Nov. 20, John?
It’s because on that date in 1959, the U.N. General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. On the same day in 1989, that document was adapted to form the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, which today is the most universally accepted human rights treaty in history.
Today, the idea that children have rights is widely accepted, but in 1919, when Eglantyne Jebb founded Save the Children and first drafted the declaration on the Rights of the Child, it was revolutionary. The Declaration boldly asserted that all children have a right to food, health care, education and protection from harm, and it put the onus on governments and people around the world to work together to protect these rights.
Alongside supporters like you, Save the Children has worked to promote and protect children’s rights for more than 100 years. Together, we are working to create a world where all children are supported and empowered to live happy, healthy lives and achieve their dreams.
Thank you for everything you do to support this important work.
