Support Treatment Advocacy Center’s approach to treatment Dear John, Eleven years ago, my close family member was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In those early days of his illness, I had to educate myself and others about what schizophrenia really is. I searched the internet, read every book I could find on the topic, and I connected with local support groups and advocates — which led me to Treatment Advocacy Center. The support and resources I received at Treatment Advocacy Center helped me advocate on my loved one’s behalf and secure the treatment he needed. Now, as Treatment Advocacy Center’s senior family liaison, I’m able to pay it forward and support other family members who are trying to secure the best possible care for their loved ones with severe mental illness. Treatment Advocacy Center has made a huge difference in the lives of so many families — including mine! Donate today to support our work advocating on behalf of our loved ones. DONATE I wish the journey to secure the care my loved one needed had been easier. I wish I had had someone with experience to whom I could reach out for guidance on how to help my family member access much-needed care. I have had to learn a great deal about navigating our broken mental health care system, through trial and error and from listening to the stories of other families. Now, I’m deeply moved to be able to use my life experience and knowledge to help others. Sometimes when people call, they’re just looking to connect. Other times, they’re calling in the midst of a serious crisis. Whatever the circumstance, I’m so glad I can be an empathetic resource. While I’m working directly with family members, other Treatment Advocacy Centre staff members are advocating to change laws and the entire system relating to SMI. Our staff may be small, but we are mighty — and we’re all united in the effort to eliminate barriers to timely and effective treatment for those with SMI and to support their loved ones. Please, make a generous donation to Treatment Advocacy Center. Your donation supports my work guiding families through day-to-day challenges, as well as the policy work to ensure that everyone gets the treatment and support they need.
