Dear John,
The initial reports from the midterm elections are in, and so far, election processes across the country are playing out as they should. But this election also showed that our work to give voters justified confidence in our elections is more important than ever.
Our team worked with the Election Protection Coalition ([link removed]) through Election Day, monitoring and troubleshooting voting equipment issues and pulling from resources like the Verifier ([link removed]) and Voting Equipment Database ([link removed]) . Overall, election workers administered the election without major incidents and were able to keep voters voting, even as they were under intense pressure and scrutiny.
But we also saw the continued weaponization of disinformation about voting equipment, with bad actors amplifying routine voting equipment issues to spread falsehoods about the validity of the election. We helped sort fact from fiction, giving voters, our coalition partners on the ground, and the media trusted information about how votes are cast and counted.
We worked with reporters to make sure the public received accurate information. Check out a few of the articles we contributed to:
✔️ Roll Call: Glitch, website attack in two states fuel election misinformation ([link removed])
✔️ The Washington Post: Election security has improved since 2016 ([link removed])
✔️ GOVERNING: Election Deniers in Key States Lose Secretary of State Races ([link removed])
✔️ Reuters: Fact Check-Images do not show ballots dumped during 2022 midterm elections ([link removed])
✔️ The Washington Post: Nearly every election-denying secretary of state candidate lost ([link removed])
✔️ The Pew Trusts: Voters Push Back Against Election Deniers in Key States ([link removed])
Right now, we’re supporting election officials on the ground who are conducting risk-limiting audits ([link removed]) — a transparent, efficient, and cost-effective way for election officials to check the reported election results before the results are certified. RLAs give strong evidence to support the final election outcome and give the public confidence that their votes count.
At Verified Voting, our work is just beginning after Election Day. We’re supporting election officials during the post-election period and are already looking ahead to how we can continue to strengthen and protect future elections. Help support our work by making a gift ([link removed]) towards secure, accessible elections and a stronger democracy for all voters.
With thanks,
Pamela Smith, President & CEO
