Follow NASN on Social President's Message November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM), and this year the Epilepsy Foundation's theme is There is no NEAM without ME. With collaboration and support, we can raise awareness and educate about epilepsies and seizures and push for more research to improve outcomes. For students living with epilepsy, schools must be well-equipped with the tools necessary to provide a safe and enriching environment. Epilepsy Foundation of America has launched a nationwide initiative to pass Seizure Safe Schools legislation in all states. Learn more about the initiative and where your state stands and find resources. Students with seizures and epilepsy experience complex and unique issues in the school setting. The School Nursing Evidence-based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Seizures and Epilepsy is based on the most recent and highest quality evidence available, and implementation will assist the school nurse in providing high-quality care for students with seizure disorders to improve the health and safety of students with epilepsy. The Impact of School Nurse Access to Medical Records in an EHR Results from a study evaluating school nurse access to a hospital-based electronic health record (EHR) determined the impact of school nurse access to protected health information in an EHR on school nurse satisfaction with care coordination for children in schools with chronic medical conditions. In the course Access to Medical Records in an Electronic Health Record, you'll learn about barriers to communication and care coordination between hospitals and school nurses, ways school nurses can develop partnerships with hospitals through the use of EHRs, and the benefits of allowing school nurses access to a hospital-based EHR. This research session was initially presented at Virtual NASN2021 and is now available in the NASN Learning Center. 2022 Hyperhidrosis Awareness Month Hyperhidrosis is a serious medical condition characterized by excessive, uncontrollable sweating that nearly triples anxiety and depression risks. Together with its community, the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHhS) is working to lift hyperhidrosis out of hiding so people experiencing the condition can find treatment. Raise awareness about how extreme sweating needs extra attention, treatment, and understanding. Important treatment information and help are available at www.SweatHelp.org. Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection (RSV) Information and Resources CDC surveillance has shown an increase in RSV detections and RSV-associated emergency department visits and hospitalizations in multiple U.S. regions, with some regions nearing seasonal peak levels. Clinicians and public health professionals should be aware of increases in respiratory viruses, including RSV. Learn more and see CDC RSV resources.
