COP27: Make a difference with WLT’s
Carbon Balanced programme

COP27, which began in Egypt on Sunday, November 6, has been billed by its organisers as “the world’s watershed moment on climate action”. The pressure to make this a reality could not be higher, with the UN recently confirming that the past eight years were the eight hottest ever recorded ([link removed]) and that there is “no credible pathway to 1.5°C in place ([link removed]) .”

The effects of climate change have been particularly evident for WLT partners in recent months. Droughts, hurricanes, typhoons and landslides are being intensified by our warming climate. You can read about the impact of these disasters, and how our partners’ conservation work offers a solution to the climate crisis, in this blog ([link removed]) .

Tragically, it is the people who have played the smallest role in this ongoing crisis who are most affected by the damage it brings. This has been a key theme in the first few days of COP27: major economies and historical emitters have a responsibility to help less-developed nations prepare for, adapt to, and mitigate the effects of climate change.

If this responsibility is taken seriously and backed up by both commitments and actions, COP27 can mark a shift in climate change leadership, writes WLT CEO Catherine Barnard in her new blog ([link removed]) . But while global leaders are in the spotlight, we can also use this pivotal moment in time to assess our own environmental impact and think about what we can do to mobilise real change.

By offsetting your unavoidable residual emissions through WLT’s Carbon Balanced programme, you can protect the carbon-rich forests that are essential to a healthy planet, at the same time providing a sustainable future for local communities and biodiversity.

Measure, Reduce, Balance:
Quantify your emissions with WLT

One of the biggest statements to come from last year’s COP26 summit was the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use. ([link removed]) Signed by over 140 countries, the declaration recognised the role of forests in fighting climate change and pledged to end deforestation by 2030. Leaders at COP27 have now launched the Forests and Climate Leaders’ Partnership ([link removed]) to help governments deliver on this historic pledge.

When you support the Carbon Balanced ([link removed]) programme, you’re funding conservation projects that protect forests around the world. These forests capture and store carbon, support wildlife and local communities, and have “significant and overwhelmingly positive effects on climate stability”, according to new research ([link removed]) .

You can start to quantify your carbon footprint with WLT’s Carbon Calculator, ([link removed]) which is free for individuals to use. From a single car journey to your home’s annual energy usage, the Calculator will tell you how much forest you’ll need to save to offset your unavoidable residual emissions.

We also work with organisations ([link removed]) that have first taken steps to measure and reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible – an essential immediate step as we transition to a less carbon-intensive society.

Our Life on the Edge appeal - 75% funded

** ([link removed])

Protecting natural ecosystems is one of the best things we can do to combat climate change, and that’s exactly what WLT supporters have been funding with their donations to ** Life on the Edge ([link removed])
. Our appeal was launched one month ago, and in that time you’ve raised over £1 million to safeguard Ecuador’s unique foothill forests and their remarkable biodiversity.

Thanks to you, the expansion of Río Anzu and Río Zúñac is now within reach, a project that will double the amount of land currently protected by the two reserves. If you help us reach our £1.43 million fundraising target, you’ll be saving forests used by a spectacular array of wildlife, from Spectacled Bears and Black-and-chestnut Eagles to frogs and orchids found nowhere else on Earth.

The species of Anzu and Zúñac are living on the edge, with oil, timber and agriculture industries closing in. By working together, we can protect their forest home and secure a safe future for all!
