COP27: Make a difference with WLT’s
Carbon Balanced programme
COP27, which began in Egypt on Sunday, November 6, has been billed by its organisers as “the world’s watershed moment on climate action”. The pressure to make this a reality could not be higher, with the UN recently confirming that the past eight years were the
eight hottest ever recorded and that there is “
no credible pathway to 1.5°C in place.”
The effects of climate change have been particularly evident for WLT partners in recent months. Droughts, hurricanes, typhoons and landslides are being intensified by our warming climate. You can read about the impact of these disasters, and how our partners’ conservation work offers a solution to the climate crisis, in
this blog.
Tragically, it is the people who have played the smallest role in this ongoing crisis who are most affected by the damage it brings. This has been a key theme in the first few days of COP27: major economies and historical emitters have a responsibility to help less-developed nations prepare for, adapt to, and mitigate the effects of climate change.
If this responsibility is taken seriously and backed up by both commitments and actions, COP27 can mark a shift in climate change leadership, writes WLT CEO Catherine Barnard in
her new blog. But while global leaders are in the spotlight, we can also use this pivotal moment in time to assess our own environmental impact and think about what we can do to mobilise real change.
By offsetting your unavoidable residual emissions through WLT’s Carbon Balanced programme, you can protect the carbon-rich forests that are essential to a healthy planet, at the same time providing a sustainable future for local communities and biodiversity.
