** CfA's November 4, 2022 Newsletter
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your continued support of Campaign for Accountability. We're dedicated to continue working to hold the powerful accountable.

** This Week's Updates:
------------------------------------------------------------
Google Cashes in on Disinformation: Back in 2017, TTP released a report ([link removed])
that identified misleading, partisan news sites as a driver of ad revenue for Google. Instead of tackling the issue, Google has gradually ended advertising relationships with a select number of sites while failing to enforce its own policies regarding harmful content. Now, ProPublica’s new report ([link removed])
paints a grim picture of the role Google’s ads play in funding disinformation around the world. When you don’t fix your broken systems, the cracks just get bigger - how much longer can Google ignore them?

Meta’s Political Ad Pause Exposes Larger Problems: This week, Meta announced a pause on political advertisements in the days leading up to the midterms. They made the same gesture back in 2020, as if other serious issues weren’t already brewing ([link removed]) on their platforms every other day of the year. TTP is calling it for what it is ([link removed]) - a sign that Meta knows that it can’t trust its ad review process, and doesn’t want to deal with any PR headaches when something inevitably goes wrong.

** What We're Reading:
------------------------------------------------------------

* Dear Mark Zuckerberg: Meta Was a Risky Investment Long Before the Metaverse ([link removed])
Meta’s unusual corporate structure gives Mark Zuckerberg and a small group of individuals an outsized say in the company’s direction, which has limited oversight and led them head-first into serious risk. The Metaverse is just the tip of the iceberg.

* Churches Are Breaking The Law And Endorsing In Elections, Experts Say. The IRS Looks The Other Way ([link removed])
A report from ProPublica and the Texas Tribune examined the increased political engagement of certain churches, which flies in the face of non-profit tax law. Now, CfA is calling for real IRS oversight ([link removed]) of this behavior.

* Tech Firms Becoming ‘Too Big To Govern’, Says Uber Whistleblower ([link removed])
Some big tech companies are wealthier than the countries trying to regulate them, and Uber whistleblower Marc McGann is sounding the alarm while urging tech employees with concerns about their workplaces to step forward.
