Google Cashes in on Disinformation: Back in 2017, TTP released a report that identified misleading, partisan news sites as a driver of ad revenue for Google. Instead of tackling the issue, Google has gradually ended advertising relationships with a select number of sites while failing to enforce its own policies regarding harmful content. Now, ProPublica’s new report paints a grim picture of the role Google’s ads play in funding disinformation around the world. When you don’t fix your broken systems, the cracks just get bigger - how much longer can Google ignore them?
Meta’s Political Ad Pause Exposes Larger Problems: This week, Meta announced a pause on political advertisements in the days leading up to the midterms. They made the same gesture back in 2020, as if other serious issues weren’t already brewing on their platforms every other day of the year. TTP is calling it for what it is - a sign that Meta knows that it can’t trust its ad review process, and doesn’t want to deal with any PR headaches when something inevitably goes wrong.
