Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Thank you to everyone who banded together so quickly last week to help us raise nearly $10,000 for humanitarian relief in El Salvador. Our team in Latin America said that the response felt like “a collective hug to the communities” impacted by Tropical Storm Julia. We deeply appreciate your support.

With elections underway across the U.S., many are working to uphold our democratic institutions and protect voting rights. But today, 4.6 million people, disproportionately Black and Brown people, are denied their right to vote because they have felony convictions. The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and should never be taken away. Contact your governor today and urge them to restore voting rights for all. [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Promoting organizational inclusivity in Indonesia: [link removed] Since the 1970s, AFSC has worked closely with local partners in Indonesia to bridge conflict divides and promote inclusion. Today we’re working with the Indonesian Justice and Peace Foundation to address issues facing LGBTQI+ people. Learn more in this interview with our partners Mario Prajna Patama and Raiz Rizqy.

It’s time to end Israel’s military detention of Palestinian children: [link removed] In the early hours of Oct. 18, Israeli soldiers entered the home of 16-year-old Shadi Khoury, a student at Ramallah Friends School. They beat him, dragged him from his house, and detained him without charge or trial. AFSC calls for the immediate release of Shadi and all Palestinian children held in Israeli military detention.

Sign the petition: Demand Congress put an end to private prisons: [link removed] Private prison facilities are notorious for overcrowding, medical negligence, inhumane living conditions, and abusing people in their custody. Yet, federal and state lawmakers keep pouring money into them. Please join AFSC, Daily Kos, and other partners to demand an end to all contracts with private prisons.

Bringing stories of Palestinians in Gaza to people in the U.S.: [link removed] This month, contributors to AFSC’s anthology “Light in Gaza” are speaking in several U.S. cities. If you haven’t had a chance to attend an event, read more to learn about their efforts to bring Palestinian stories to U.S. audiences in this story featuring Yousef M. Aljamal, Asmaa Abu Mezied, and AFSC’s Michael Merryman-Lotze, Jennifer Bing, and Jehad Abusalim. (Wisconsin Muslim Journal)
