It's a scary time, John.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, the nation has been struck by a wave of “zombie laws” coming back to life with extreme abortion bans.
These are laws passed decades ago (some more than a century) that were rendered invalid by Roe v Wade . But they were never removed from the books, and now they’re back to haunt us all.
A pre-Civil War Texas law from 1857, drafted amid a racist panic over declining white birth rates, has already sprung back from the grave and (coupled with the state’s trigger law passed in 2021) made abortion a felony punishable by up to life in prison.
A Michigan law from 1931 makes abortion a crime in almost every case, including rape and incest, and stands to be reanimated unless Prop 3 passes on the ballot in November. Currently a court order is all that holds this ban at bay.
Altogether nine states – Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin – had Pre-Roe abortion bans on the books that stand to be (or already have been) activated by the fall of Roe v Wade .
Already 1 in 3 American women live in states where abortion has been banned entirely or in almost all cases. And if Republicans regain control of the House and Senate, they will fight for a national abortion ban. We can’t let that happen. Pitch in now to help our BNC candidates win on November 8th. This is a high-stakes election, and Brand New Congress is in a unique position to make a real impact on the future of reproductive justice.
Our candidates are running to fill open seats, flip red seats, and oust entrenched incumbents who cater to extremist policies like these dangerous and deadly zombie laws.
If we win our races, we double the BNC voting bloc in Congress and send a fresh wave of progressive power into the U.S. House and Senate.
If we lose, and if Republicans are allowed to retake the majority, they will set reproductive rights back to pre-Civil War status – along with every other progressive priority.
We have the power to stop them, stand up for abortion rights, and advance the fight for universal healthcare, climate action, unions, fair wages, criminal justice reform, and so much more.
That’s the choice on the ballot in November. We will fight for every victory to keep moving this nation forward. Will you join us? [[link removed]]
In solidarity,
Brand New Congress

Since 2016 BNC has led the way in advancing popular policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal and electing bold progressive fighters. We recruited and elected AOC in 2018 and Cori Bush in 2020. With seven BNC Reps currently in office [[link removed]] , we are growing progressive power in Congress.
This November we’re working to flip multiple red seats, fill open seats with bold progressives, and elect our first BNC Senator by defeating Rand Paul.
Pitch in today and join us as we take over Congress and return power to the people.
