The IRS has hired 4,000 new customer service representatives [ [link removed] ] to help answer phones and provide other services. This marks significant progress as the agency prepares for the 2023 tax filing season. The goal is to add another 1,000 customer service representatives by the end of the year, bringing the total of new hires in this area to 5,000.

The IRS released a new set of tax gap estimates [ [link removed] ] on tax years 2014 through 2016 showing the estimated gross tax gap increased to $496 billion, a rise of more than $58 billion from the prior estimate.

A federal court in the Eastern District of New York has permanently barred Brooklyn-based defendants Maria Cuervo and Danays Enterprises & Travel, Inc. [ [link removed] ] from operating a tax return preparation business. The judgment entered by the Court also requires Cuervo to disgorge to the United States $150,000 in fees that the Government alleged she received as ill-gotten gains for preparing federal tax returns that make grossly incompetent, negligent, reckless or fraudulent claims.
