1.??IRS quickly moves forward with taxpayer service improvements; 4,000 hired to provide more help during 2023 tax season on phones The IRS has hired 4,000 new customer service representatives to help answer phones and provide other services. This marks significant progress as the agency prepares for the 2023 tax filing season. The goal is to add another 1,000 customer service representatives by the end of the year, bringing the total of new hires in this area to 5,000. 2.??2023 PTIN renewal period underway Tax pros: Start the upcoming 2023 filing season smoothly by renewing your Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) now. All current PTINs will expire Dec. 31. Visit IRS.gov for more information about how to renew a PTIN online, how to apply for a PTIN and PTIN system enhancements. 3.??IRS updates tax gap estimates; new data points the way toward enhancing taxpayer service, compliance efforts The IRS released a new set of tax gap estimates on tax years 2014 through 2016 showing the estimated gross tax gap increased to $496 billion, a rise of more than $58 billion from the prior estimate. 4.??Doug O?Donnell to serve as acting IRS Commissioner Current IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig today announced that Doug O?Donnell, IRS Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement, has been selected to serve as acting IRS Commissioner. Commissioner Rettig?s term ends on Nov. 12. 5.??Service providers, others may receive 1099-Ks for sales over $600 Reminder: Taxpayers earning income from selling goods and/or providing services may receive Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions, for payment card transactions and third-party payment network transactions of more than $600 for the year. There is no change to the taxability of income; the only change is to the reporting rules for Form 1099-K. For more information, visit the new Form 1099-K Frequently Asked Questions page on IRS.gov. 7.??News from the Justice Department?s Tax Division A federal court in the Eastern District of New York has permanently barred Brooklyn-based defendants Maria Cuervo and Danays Enterprises & Travel, Inc. from operating a tax return preparation business. The judgment entered by the Court also requires Cuervo to disgorge to the United States $150,000 in fees that the Government alleged she received as ill-gotten gains for preparing federal tax returns that make grossly incompetent, negligent, reckless or fraudulent claims.
