Treatment Advocacy Center is the country’s leading organization focused solely on SMI and bringing these stories to the forefront of policy making and research. To carry our work forward, we need your help. Next year is our 25th anniversary, and we’ve set an ambitious goal to raise $150,000 by the end of 2022. We want to start the new year with the resources necessary to continue to be the catalyst for change for the elimination of barriers to timely and effective treatment for those with severe mental illness. Days after the death of my grandmother, our family found out that her mother — my great-grandmother — had not died when my grandmother was a child as we’d been told. The truth was, she was hidden away in a psychiatric hospital, a mere 40 miles from her family, until she died alone in 1976. She never escaped her psychosis. Both science and the law completely failed her. I came to work at Treatment Advocacy Center because our loved ones — including my sister, diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder — deserve a better life than what my great-grandmother was forced to endure.
