Dear John,

As members of the Treatment Advocacy Center community, we each have a story about severe mental illness.

Our stories are powerful. When we share our stories with lawmakers and researchers, they have the power to create a wave of change. Treatment Advocacy Center is the country’s leading organization focused solely on SMI and bringing these stories to the forefront of policy making and research.

To carry our work forward, we need your help. Next year is our 25th anniversary, and we’ve set an ambitious goal to raise $150,000 by the end of 2022. We want to start the new year with the resources necessary to continue to be the catalyst for change for the elimination of barriers to timely and effective treatment for those with severe mental illness.

Donate now to ensure that we meet our goal and have the resources we need for the year ahead.

Just like you, I have a powerful story of a loved one with SMI. Days after the death of my grandmother, our family found out that her mother — my great-grandmother — had not died when my grandmother was a child as we’d been told. The truth was, she was hidden away in a psychiatric hospital, a mere 40 miles from her family, until she died alone in 1976. She never escaped her psychosis. Both science and the law completely failed her.

I came to work at Treatment Advocacy Center because our loved ones — including my sister, diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder — deserve a better life than what my great-grandmother was forced to endure.

As a valued member of our community, you’ve seen the change we can create together. Now, I hope you’ll invest in the future of our work with a generous contribution toward our end-of-year goal.

Over the next two months, you’ll be hearing from Treatment Advocacy Center staff and board members about all the ways we’re making a difference in the SMI community. You are a vital part of our success. Be sure to donate to Treatment Advocacy Center so we can continue our critical work as a catalyst for change for those affected by SMI.

Sincerely,

Lisa Dailey
