When the news is complicated and the pace is fast, don’t forget the power of your writing to help audiences make sense of their world. Here are some of our favorite pieces of advice from Poynter senior scholar and writing coach Roy Peter Clark:
✨ Everything around you can be a source of inspiration. Here’s what at-home COVID tests ([link removed]) , the Tower of Babel ([link removed]) and even Hallmark Christmas movies ([link removed]) taught Roy about writing.
📏 Just because journalists choose to be neutral about some things does not mean they have to be neutral in all things. Roy examines “distance from neutrality” ([link removed]) instead of “objectivity.”
❓ Use the magic of the question mark ([link removed]) .

Midterm Essentials: Election Issues Broadcast Journalists Should Know
Self-directed online course, start anytime
The goal of this online, expert-led and practical training is simple: We want to help journalists ask more informed questions and demand more solid answers about complex issues facing America in the 2022 midterm election cycle.
Topics include climate change, inflation and the economy, health care and drug costs, immigration, campaign finance, guns and gun control, and detecting disinformation.
More than ever, this training is vital for busy, resource-strapped journalists who might otherwise settle for campaign talking points, allow candidates to talk in rhetorical circles or amplify common falsehoods online.
Cost: Free.

** The Bowtie Ball
------------------------------------------------------------
In-person event, Saturday, Nov. 12, Tampa, Florida
The Bowtie Ball is Poynter’s largest celebration of journalistic excellence and most significant fundraising event where hundreds of guests — including media executives, business leaders, philanthropists, public servants and community members — are immersed in an elegant evening of impactful storytelling.
Join us this year on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Tampa Marriott Water Street. Together, we’ll celebrate the free press and honor the distinguished careers of legendary journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein whose dogged reporting of the 1972 Watergate break-in changed the course of American history and fortified journalism’s role in democracy. The pair’s contributions will be elevated throughout the evening; Bernstein will attend the event in person and reflect upon his investigative reporting during an interview on stage.
Cost: $225-$350. Proceeds from your ticket help Poynter improve, strengthen and sustain quality journalism in diverse newsrooms around the world.
