Game and Fish releases 18 black-footed ferrets on historic recovery site

Eighteen black-footed ferrets were released last week on the historic recovery site near Meeteetse. Twelve male and six female captive-born ferrets were coaxed into burrows in their new wildlands home. The small mammal that was once thought to be extinct was rediscovered in Wyoming 41 years ago. *The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has been working on their recovery since then. In late July the Jackson Region team of Game and Fish stocked 750 Snake River cutthroat trout into Mystery Lake in the Teton Wilderness. The 5-inch fish were packed into the remote lake on horseback. *The stocking of the fish is another step in restoring the lake to its native Snake River cutthroat trout. [ [link removed] ]*

The picturesque Flat Creek, winding its way through the National Elk Refuge just north of Jackson, is well-known for its trophy-class cutthroat trout.?Recently, the Jackson fish crew sampled a section of Flat Creek to keep an eye on the renowned fishery. *As expected, a number of trophy-class cutthroat were netted. Game and Fish works to improve habitat for mule deer through sagebrush mowing

For close to fifteen years, Game and Fish has worked to enhance sagebrush steppe habitats specifically where mule deer and greater sage-grouse live through the department?s Mule Deer Initiative (MDI) projects. Currently these projects are ongoing in several areas throughout the state. Without quality habitat, Wyoming?s hunting and fishing would be extremely impacted. *Projects like these enable Wyoming?s mule deer to remain vibrant and provide better opportunity for hunters.
