Dear John,

Don't miss our events this month
, which include a
professional development opportunity and a policy spotlight on October
25 with Dave A. Chokshi, the former Commissioner of the New York City
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Hospital-Related Risks

Individuals with developmental disabilities have more hospital
admissions than the general population, thus facing heightened exposure
to risks of hospitalization.

In a new paper featured in the Disability & Health

theme issue, Rocco Friebel and Laia Maynou investigate the treatment of
people with developmental disability in hospitals

in the English National Health Service.

The authors' analysis indicates that patients with developmental
disability are disproportionately affected by patient safety incidents.

Additionally, most of the patients assessed experienced above-average
rates of pressure ulcers, post-operative sepsis, and post-operative
pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis.

Patient safety incidents in these patient groups cause a significant
increase in in-hospital mortality and extended hospital stays.

The authors suggest that health systems adopt a proactive approach to
identifying patients at risk and systematically monitor patients'
experiences.
