Dear John,

Hospital-Related Risks
Individuals with developmental disabilities have more hospital admissions than the general population, thus facing heightened exposure to risks of hospitalization.
The authors' analysis indicates that patients with developmental disability are disproportionately affected by patient safety incidents.
Additionally, most of the patients assessed experienced above-average rates of pressure ulcers, post-operative sepsis,
and post-operative pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis.
Patient safety incidents in these patient groups cause a significant increase in in-hospital mortality and extended hospital stays.
The authors suggest that health systems adopt a proactive approach to identifying patients at risk and systematically monitor patients’ experiences.
