Dear Friend,

A new report proves it: When newspapers close down and journalists are
laid off, the result is lower voter turnout, more corruption, and a
damaged democracy.

The study from PEN America looked at the consequences of 2,100
newspapers closing down over the last 15 years and found that in
communities that lost local papers people were less informed, less
inclined to vote, and more likely to experience environmental harm.

Common Dreams exists to watchdog the powerful and expose wrongdoing—as
an antidote to the for-profit corporate media system. Our mission: To
inform. To inspire. To ignite change for the common good.

We don't rely on billionaire owners or corporate ads to keep going. We
rely on YOU to make sure the death of Common Dreams never happens.

Independent journalism has never been more needed or more at risk than
it is right now. Will you pitch in to support our people-powered model
and help Common Dreams start 2020 at full throttle?

Will you make a generous tax-deductible year-end donation today? Your
gift will be matched by a generous anonymous donor.
