A new report proves it: When newspapers close down and journalists are laid off, the result is lower voter turnout, more corruption, and a damaged democracy.
The study from PEN America looked at the consequences of 2,100 newspapers closing down over the last 15 years and found that in communities that lost local papers people were less informed, less inclined to vote, and more likely to experience environmental harm.
