Dear John,
Did you know that Arizona has some of the strictest voter ID laws in the country? Itโs why my job as the VoteRiders Arizona Voter ID Coalition Coordinator is so challenging and so necessary.
Every Arizona voter is required to present either photo identification or two forms of non-photo identification at the polls. From my vantage point on the ground in Phoenix, I see the ways this law causes confusion and depresses turnout โ for example, some tribal IDs are not sufficient and require a second form of ID.
Thatโs a big deal in a state with such a large Indigenous population. In the Phoenix area alone there are more than 200,000 Indigenous eligible voters, and each person needs to know what IDs they can use to vote successfully.
Last month, I joined the Phoenix Indian Center for a voter registration event to help educate Indigenous voters on the IDs they can and canโt use to vote. For those folks without one of the acceptable forms of ID, VoteRiders can help them get the ID or any underlying documents they need, and will even give them a free ride to the DMV.
You can read all about my work to help Indigenous voters in Arizona learn about and obtain their voter IDs in the Arizona Central. >> [link removed]
At VoteRiders, we donโt want a lack of access to identification or confusion about what ID is required to ever keep eligible voters from making their voices heard.
If anyone you know needs information or assistance, let us know. >> [link removed]
Sincerely,
Danielle Duarte
