Governor DeSantis Briefs President Biden on Hurricane Ian Recovery Efforts
Governor DeSantis met with President Biden Wednesday to brief him on the destruction wrought by Hurricane Ian and to continue to garner federal aid for Floridians throughout the state.
"We are cutting through the bureaucracy. We are cutting through the red tape,” Governor DeSantis said. “And that's from local government, state government, all the way up to the president. So we appreciate the team effort."
President Biden praised Governor DeSantis’ leadership in the hurricane recovery: “I think he’s done a good job."
Governor DeSantis announced that about 2,500 rescues had been made by about 1,000 search-and-rescue personnel working in the region. He also said about 97% of the state has power back on. Southwest Florida remains the primary area with power outages.

STATE COMPLETES RAPID BRIDGE REOPENING TO PINE ISLAND IN LEE COUNTY
Governor DeSantis announced the early completion of emergency road and bridge repairs for Pine Island in Lee County. On Sunday, Governor DeSantis directed FDOT to work with Lee County to expedite work and complete repairs by Saturday, October 8. Work began on Monday and FDOT crews worked hard to finish the repairs in less than three days.
“Within 24 hours after I asked FDOT to get involved, we had more than 130 trucks rolling in and crews got to work,” Governor DeSantis said. “We made it a priority and we didn’t just get it done – we got it done quickly.”

GOVERNOR PRIORITIZES SANIBEL CAUSEWAY REPAIRS
Governor DeSantis directed FDOT to prioritize repairs to the Sanibel Causeway, which are needed for first responders and Sanibel residents to access the island, as well as other recovery efforts such as power restoration and debris removal.

FLORIDA RESPONSE TO HURRICANE IAN CONTINUES
Governor DeSantis is issuing daily updates along with Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie, First Lady Casey DeSantis, CFO Jimmy Patronis and numerous federal, state and local emergency management officials.
After peaking at 2.4 million Floridians without power last week, there are now fewer than 300,000 power outages. So nearly 90 percent of accounts that lost power have been restored. There are currently 11 fueling depot stations open statewide.
It’s important to remember that the 42,000 linemen who have been working heroically to restore power were pre-positioned ahead of the storm to follow right in behind it to begin repairs immediately. This was crucial in getting power back on quickly to so many.
More than 11.5 million MREs and 41 million bottles of water have been distributed so far by the Florida Department of Emergency Management.
Governor DeSantis’ authorized Joint Task Force Florida and has 5,050 personnel activated and executing missions in response to Hurricane Ian. The Florida National Guard has supported a total of 247 missions.
Additionally, 27 POD sites operating and distributing food, water and ice, including:
- 2,728 pallets of water
- 2,331 pallets of food
- 606 pallets of ice
- 385 pallets of tarps

ATTORNEY GENERAL MOODY EXPANDS PRICE GOUGING HOTLINE STATEWIDE
Attorney General Ashley Moody has expanded Florida’s Price Gouging Hotline statewide. All Floridians can now report instances of severe price increases on essential commodities to the Attorney General's Office. Florida’s price gouging law only applies to commodities and services essential to preparing for, or recovering from, a storm during a declared state of emergency.

ATTORNEY GENERAL MOODY SENDS CONSUMER PROTECTION INVESTIGATORS TO LEE COUNTY
While Attorney General Moody’s expanded Price Gouging Hotline remains active, many Floridians in the most affected areas do not have internet or may not have access to cell phone service — making it difficult to report allegations of extreme price increases or disaster-related scams.
So AG Moody is sending consumer protection investigators to the region to be on the ground to protect hurricane victims from further victimization.

SENATOR RUBIO PUSHING MAJOR DISASTER SUPPLEMENTAL SPENDING BILL THROUGH CONGRESS
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio is pushing a major disaster supplemental spending measure through Congress after meeting with Governor DeSantis, Florida’s First Lady Casey DeSantis, U.S. Senator Rick Scott and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell for a briefing with local officials in Lee County to discuss the damage following Hurricane Ian.
“Florida has a long road to recovery ahead,” Senator Rubio said. “I plan to make sure our state receives the emergency relief it needs to fully rebuild.”
NEW POLLS SHOWING INCREASED LEADS FOR GOVERNOR DESANTIS AND REPUBLICAN CABINET CANDIDATES
From The Hill <[link removed]>: Governor DeSantis is leading Democrat Charlie Crist by 11 points, according to a poll released on Wednesday. The Mason-Dixon Florida poll found:
- Likely Governor DeSantis voters: 52 percent
- Likely Charlie Crist voters: 41 percent.
- 92 percent of Republicans support Governor DeSantis
- 84 percent support Charlie Crist
Statewide, Attorney General Ashley Moody, Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis and Commissioner of Agriculture candidate Wilton Simpson all held 10-point or higher leads.
