Taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2021 tax return [ [link removed] ] have until Monday, Oct. 17 to file to avoid the late filing penalty. *2.? Hurricane Ian victims in the Carolinas qualify for tax relief*________________________________________________________________________

Hurricane Ian victims throughout both North Carolina and South Carolina [ [link removed] ] now have until Feb. 15, 2023, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. This is similar to the relief announced last week for Ian victims in Florida [ [link removed] ]. The current list of eligible localities is available on the disaster relief [ [link removed] ] page on IRS.gov. *3.? Initial Appeals contact letters revised as part of effort to enhance taxpayer experience*________________________________________________________________________

The IRS Independent Office of Appeals is taking important steps to improve how taxpayers interact and communicate with the agency by revising their initial contact letters [ [link removed] ]. Appeals has made two key revisions to these initial contact letters in response to feedback from taxpayers and practitioners. Visit IRS.gov for more information about these revisions and how to submit additional comments.

The IRS issues six notices asking for comments on different aspects of extensions and enhancements of energy tax benefits [ [link removed] ] in the Inflation Reduction Act. A federal court in the Southern District of Florida has ordered Nate E. Dameus [ [link removed] ], a return preparer operating in the West Palm Beach area, to pay $213,500 in fees he received for preparing tax returns in violation of a permanent injunction that barred him from filing, preparing, or helping to prepare federal tax returns for others.
