1.? Don?t miss this important Oct. 17 tax extension deadline

Taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2021 tax return have until Monday, Oct. 17 to file to avoid the late filing penalty. Those who still need to file should do so as soon as possible. This news release is also available in Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

2.? Hurricane Ian victims in the Carolinas qualify for tax relief

Hurricane Ian victims throughout both North Carolina and South Carolina now have until Feb. 15, 2023, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. This is similar to the relief announced last week for Ian victims in Florida. The current list of eligible localities is available on the disaster relief page on IRS.gov. 3.? Initial Appeals contact letters revised as part of effort to enhance taxpayer experience

The IRS Independent Office of Appeals is taking important steps to improve how taxpayers interact and communicate with the agency by revising their initial contact letters. Appeals has made two key revisions to these initial contact letters in response to feedback from taxpayers and practitioners. Visit IRS.gov for more information about these revisions and how to submit additional comments.

4.? IRS requests public input on upcoming energy guidance

The IRS issues six notices asking for comments on different aspects of extensions and enhancements of energy tax benefits in the Inflation Reduction Act. Those interested in providing feedback to the questions in the notices should follow the instructions in the notices and reply by Nov. 4, 2022.

5.? October FBAR extension deadline nears for foreign bank, financial account holders

The IRS reminds U.S. citizens, resident aliens and domestic legal entities that the extension deadline to file their annual report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) is Oct. 15. For more information about who needs to file, how to avoid penalties and how to file, visit IRS.gov. This news release is also available in Simplified Chinese.

6.??2023 Tax Counseling for the Elderly, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program grants

The IRS recently awarded $41 million in Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grants to organizations that provide free federal tax return preparation. For information on applying for the TCE or VITA grant programs, along with a list of current grant recipients, visit Tax Counseling for the Elderly or the IRS VITA Grant Program.

People who work in restaurants, salons, hotels and similar industries often receive tips for the customer service they provide. 8.??News from the Justice Department?s Tax Division

A federal court in the Southern District of Florida has ordered Nate E. Dameus, a return preparer operating in the West Palm Beach area, to pay $213,500 in fees he received for preparing tax returns in violation of a permanent injunction that barred him from filing, preparing, or helping to prepare federal tax returns for others.
