** Alcohol Change UK responds to scrapping of planned increase on alcohol duty

New Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has scrapped the planned increase on alcohol duty.

Responding to the axing of the planned duty increase, Dr Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Change UK, said:

"Cancelling the planned increase on alcohol duty is damaging and will cause more harm than good. Evidence clearly shows that cutting duty increases alcohol harm."

NHS data from the 2021 'Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use among Young People' study was published last month. 40% of pupils said they had never had an alcoholic drink, and 6% of all pupils said they usually drank alcohol at least once per week (the same as in 2018).
