** A Message From Governor Ivey

Fellow Alabamians,
Let me first say, our hearts and prayers are with those affected by Hurricane Ian and those still in its path. Alabama remains ready to assist our neighbors not only today but in the weeks ahead. Alabamians are compassionate people, and I salute the countless organizations and utility crews that are offering their support to our fellow Americans following this devastating storm.
As we head into fall and another school year, I want to begin in the area of education. Education sets the foundation for all that we are working to accomplish in Alabama and is the number one priority for my administration. From reading and solving math problems in the earliest years to setting off to college, we want to ensure our students are prepared for every phase of their educational journey and are ultimately prepared for the workforce. We recognize some schools may face even greater challenges in trying to reach these goals, therefore, with the support of the Alabama Legislature, we are investing $15 million in the Turnaround Schools Initiative, as part of the largest investment in our state’s education system. It is investments like this that are going to set the stage for our state’s future.
As you can see, we are busy on the education front, and we are also making great progress with another focal point in mental health. Last week, we held the grand opening of the new WellStone Emergency Services Crisis Center in Huntsville. Because of our historic investments in mental health care the past three years, six crisis diversion centers are scheduled to be in operation across the state by next spring. By establishing a mental health crisis continuum of care, we are connecting folks in need of urgent help with quality services dedicated to fitting their unique needs, which will promote overall recovery and reduces arrests and trips to hospital emergency rooms.
These are just some of the many initiatives my team and I are working on, and y’all, I am confident there is great possibility in the future of Alabama. It takes all of us working together, so do not hesitate to reach out to my team if we can be helpful.

Earlier this month, I was proud to present The Alabama Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities Awards at a ceremony in Birmingham. Ensuring every Alabamian has the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families remains a top priority for me. These awards highlight what is possible when people with disabilities are given the chance to contribute their skills in the workplace.
Gadsden’s Mark Robertson was named the Large Business Employee of the Year, and the University of Alabama was named the Large Business Employer of the Year. The Small Business Employee of the Year Award went to Shelby Thomas of Reid State Technical College, while Full Moon Barbecue of Alabaster was named the Small Business Employer of the Year. Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr earned the Public Service Award, and Highland Home’s Taina Sparks was named Student of the Year.

With a total of fourteen institutions, the state of Alabama has the largest number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the nation.
