SOLIDARITY AND JUST RECOVERY IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI AND ACROSS PUERTO
RICO

Dear members and supporters,

We are sharing two urgent appeals for solidarity from our member
organizations on the frontlines of climate crises, in Jackson, Mississippi,
and across all of Puerto Rico. We are also aware that many of our movement
relatives in Florida are now without power and we are watching mindfully as
folks along the East Coast prepare for coming storms.

From GRASSROOTS INTERNATIONAL [2], in coordination with ORGANIZACIÓN
BORICUA [3]:

Puerto Rico’s 3.2 million people were without electricity after the
brutal landing of Hurricane Fiona one week ago — thousands of families to
this day remain without access to electricity. Firsthand reports from our
partners described the evacuation of families, lack of energy and water,
and farmers salvaging what remained of their crops in the aftermath.

As our movement partners tell us, this disaster is compounded by the very
social disasters of colonialism and privatization. “We’ll be spending
the rest of our lives distributing filters, distributing bottles of water,
etc., if we don’t address the fundamental problem. We’ll be
continuously responding to disasters, disasters that more often than not
stem from policies that we need to transform”— Iniciativa de Eco
Desarrollo de Bahía de Jobos (IDEBAJO).

We are asking our friends and supporters to PLEASE DONATE [2] in whatever
ways you are able to the Puerto Rico frontline just recovery fund that
Grassroots International created. All funds will go directly to hurricane
response and recovery efforts by the long-term partners and trusted allies
of Grassroots International on the ground in Puerto Rico, including GGJ
member organization Organización Boricuá de Agricultura Ecológica de
Puerto Rico.

From COOPERATION JACKSON [5]:

At the end of August, devastating floods resulting from climate change ,
combined with decades of neglect and under-resourcing of the critical
infrastructure, left nearly 200,000 families in Jackson, Mississippi with
no access to drinkable water for days. When running water was restored, it
came with a boil-water notice, acknowledging that the water was not safe to
drink, especially for pregnant women, the elderly, and other vulnerable
populations. After seven weeks, the boil water notice was lifted, but
Jackson remains in a protracted water crisis.

We are asking all of our friends and comrades to join Cooperation Jackson
in the autonomous relief efforts to ensure that the homeless, the elderly,
and those with limited transportation in our community get the resources
they need. Please DONATE GENEROUSLY [4]. Please spread the word to your

Les compartimos dos pedidos urgentes de solidaridad por parte de nuestras
organizaciones miembro en las primeras líneas de las crisis climáticas,
en Jackson, Mississippi, y en todo Puerto Rico. También somos conscientes
de que muchos de nuestros parientes del movimiento en Florida están ahora
sin electricidad y estamos observando con atención mientras que la gente
de la Costa Este se prepara para las tormentas que avanzan.

De GRASSROOTS INTERNATIONAL [2], en coordinación con ORGANIZACIÓN
BORICUÁ [3]:

Las 3,2 millones de personas de Puerto Rico estuvieron sin electricidad
tras el aterrizaje brutal del huracán Fiona hace una semana — miles de
familias están sin acceso a la electricidad hasta el día de hoy. Los
informes de primera mano de nuestros colaboradores describieron la
evacuación de familias, la falta de electricidad y agua y agricultores
rescatando lo que quedó de sus cultivos luego del desastre.

Según nos relatas nuestres colaboradores del movimiento, esta catástrofe
es agravada por los desastres muy sociales del colonialismo y la
privatización. “Nos pasaremos el resto de nuestras vidas distribuyendo
filtros, distribuyendo botellas de agua, etc, si no abordamos el problema
fundamental. Estaremos respondiendo continuamente a desastres, desastres
que muy frecuentemente surgen de políticas que debemos transformar.” —
Iniciativa de Eco Desarrollo de Bahía de Jobos (IDEBAJO).

Les estamos pidiendo a nuestres amigues y partidaries que POR FAVOR DONEN
[2] de cualquier forma que puedan al fondo de recuperación de primera
línea de Puerto Rico creado por Grassroots International. Todos los fondos
irán directamente a la respuesta al huracán y los esfuerzos de
recuperación de organizaciones confiables de largo plazo asociadas o
aliadas de Grassroots International en el campo en Puerto Rico, incluyendo
a la organización miembro de GGJ Organización Boricuá de Agricultura
Ecológica de Puerto Rico.

De COOPERATION JACKSON [5]:

A fines de agosto, inundaciones devastadoras causadas por el cambio
climático, combinadas con décadas de negligencia y recursos escasos
adjudicados a infraestructura crítica, dejaron a casi 200.000 familias en
Jackson, Mississippi sin acceso al agua potable durante días. Cuando se
restauró el agua corriente, vino con un anuncio de hervir el agua,
reconociendo que el agua no era segura para beber, especialmente para
mujeres embarazadas, la gente mayor y otras poblaciones vulnerables.
Después de siente semanas, se levantó la advertencia de hervir el agua,
pero Jackson sigue en una prolongada crisis de agua.

Le pedimos a todes nuestres amigues y camaradas que les acompañen a
Cooperation Jackson en sus esfuerzos autónomos por proveer alivio para
asegurar que la gente sin techo, los mayores y aquellos con transporte
limitado en nuestra comunidad reciban los recursos que necesitan. Por favor
