Mark your Calendars: NCAC and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators will host a live virtual discussion: Are You Free to Read What You Want? A conversation between students and banned authors. Participation is free but registration ([link removed]) is required.

NCAC HONORS FREE SPEECH DEFENDERS

On Nov. 15, 2022, The NCAC we honor such notable free speech defenders as Author and Activist George M. Johnson ([link removed]) . They have written on race, gender, sex, and culture for Essence, the Advocate, BuzzFeed News, Teen Vogue, and more than 42 other national publications. Despite efforts to silence Johnson by banning their work. They continue to serve as a dynamic voice for understanding.

High School Librarian Martha Hickson, ([link removed]) will receive the NCAC's Judith Krug Outstanding Librarian Award. Hickson is recognized for her work to defend the freedom to read as she has coordinated successful defenses to six book challenges since 2019.

NCAC RELEASES KIDS BOOK ON BANNED BOOKS

The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) and A Kids Co. release A Kids Book About Banned Books ([link removed]) . This new children's book explains what book banning is and empowers adults and young readers to have thoughtful conversations on how reading and having access to information and diverse ideas help foster meaningful connections through education and lifelong learning.
