VICTORY: We're Ending 2019 with a Historic Win From Congress!

This week, Congress gave us a huge win that will help save lives. For the first time in more than 20 years, Congress will fund research on gun violence prevention.

Why Do We Need This Research?

It's not to "prove" that there is a problem, but rather to help identify urgently needed policy and community-based solutions. Research informs policy, and we need policies and solutions that are evidence-based so we can save as many lives as possible. To put things in perspective, gun violence is the second leading cause of death for young people in America, killing 40,000 people each year. Yet it receives far less funding than any other leading cause of death in America. It all comes down to the fact that the gun lobby has been effective in ensuring that gun violence isn't addressed as a public health crisis.

Just like research has informed product safety and policy solutions around how to encourage seatbelt-wearing, prevent kids from smoking tobacco, and prevent drunk driving, we need to be able to learn more about public health and safety issues like suicide by firearm, the link between domestic violence and gun violence, safe gun storage, and more.

2020 Democratic Debates Recap: Gun Safety Needs to be Addressed

On Thursday, Presidential hopefuls and the hosts of 2020 Democratic debate had an opportunity to address an issue on the minds of all voters: gun violence. Yet, for the second debate in a row, not a single question was raised about gun violence prevention. Once is a blip, but twice is a pattern. This is unacceptable. A public health epidemic that kills 100 people every single day must be addressed by all Presidential candidates.

The next Democratic debate will be held on January 14 by CNN, and we need to make sure gun violence prevention is addressed so that we can elect a President who we know is committed to this issue. Lives are on the line. We can’t wait any longer.

Calling All Young People: Join Team ENOUGH Lobbying Collectives!

Our Team ENOUGH program runs the only national youth-led lobbying group for gun reform, and we're massively expanding in 2020! The Team ENOUGH Lobbying Collective trains young people and students ages 14-25 on how to effectively lobby legislators in their respective state capitol.

We have applications open in three regions — Washington, D.C., Tallahassee, FL, and Northern California. The deadline for all applications is January 12. We're Continuing to Organize for Gun Safety in Virginia

Yes, we made history last month when we flipped Virginia to a gun safety majority. But our work isn't done! We're continuing to work with community members and newly elected state legislators to champion common-sense gun reform. On Monday, January 20, Brady is joining partners in hosting the 28th Annual Vigil and Day of Action for gun safety in Virginia. We’re gathering at the Richmond capitol to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and Virginians killed by gun violence. This week, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro took bold action against “ghost guns.” [[link removed]] These types of guns are often home-made without serial numbers, which prevent police from tracking their origin at crimes scenes. This move by AG Shapiro will close a dangerous loophole that has allowed dangerous hands access to "ghost guns" for far too long. We need more leadership like this! Learn more about “ghost guns.
