From the Jan. 6 insurrection and election deniers, to voter suppression laws and bad actors sowing disinformation, it is clear that America’s democracy is under attack. As a ProPublica reader, I know you’ve been aware of this for some time now — many of you have shared your concerns directly with us by way of feedback, questions and even tips <[link removed]>.

We’re on it: ProPublica is no bystander when it comes to ensuring a transparent government, regardless of who is in power. We might be a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom, but we are staunchly in favor of a healthy democracy and we’ve got a team of reporters and editors working solely on this topic <[link removed]>. A recent story <[link removed]> of ours exposes how a new wave of voting restrictions will make participating in elections more difficult for people who struggle to read (now 1 in 5 Americans). We highlight one woman who has made it her mission to help her neighbors vote, even as it has made her a target.
