Smiles

The Smiths were one of my favorite bands of the 1980s. It wasn’t so much Morrissey’s gloomy lyrics or otherworldly voice that hooked me, although that was part of it. Mostly it was the guitar wizardry of Johnny Marr. I’d really never heard anything like the riffs he laid down on songs like “How Soon Is Now?” or “Hand In Glove.” Decades later, I’m still mesmerized by Marr’s work. This video of Marr performing “How Soon Is Now?” live about a year ago underscores that his chops are still so strong
