Good Evening,

It's Tuesday, September 20th.

Major Russian Escalation

Russia pushed ahead Tuesday with plans to annex occupied regions of Ukraine, as Moscow’s puppet authorities set dates to stage referendums on joining Russia — moves that could dramatically escalate the war, as the Washington Post reports.

Macron says Russia “broke our collective security.”

In some of his strongest remarks against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, President Emmanuel Macron of France called Moscow’s war a return to “imperialism” in his address on the opening day of the 77th U.N. General Assembly, as the NYT reports.

Deadly Unrest in Ramallah

Palestinian Authority security forces clashed with armed groups and gangs of young men who were hurling stones in the city of Nablus on Tuesday, as unrest intensified in the West Bank amid a series of Israeli military raids and arrests of militants, as the WSJ reports.

Smiles

The Smiths were one of my favorite bands of the 1980s. It wasn’t so much Morrissey’s gloomy lyrics or otherworldly voice that hooked me, although that was part of it. Mostly it was the guitar wizardry of Johnny Marr. I’d really never heard anything like the riffs he laid down on songs like “How Soon Is Now?” or “Hand In Glove.” Decades later, I’m still mesmerized by Marr’s work. This video of Marr performing “How Soon Is Now?” live about a year ago underscores that his chops are still so strong.
