For months, we’ve been building deep relationships with farmworkers and organizers across North Carolina. We’re excited to share these conversations and stories with you, and hope you’ll join us in uplifting the voices and rights of workers. In this video, Fermín, a tobacco worker in North Carolina, explains the difficulties associated with agricultural labor, and tobacco farming in particular. He states, “Here in North Carolina tobacco is the hardest work there is.” This hard work is often done by H-2A migrant farmworkers with few legal protections on the job. These workers are in a precarious position, with their right to stay in the country tied to their employer. As Fermín explains, “If you don’t perform, what do they do? They replace you. They easily forget about you.”

We are supporting efforts to increase awareness of the conditions of farm labor, and promoting the equality, dignity, and rights of farmworkers. In 2020, there were 22,000 migrant farmworkers in North Carolina alone, making just $14.16/hour. UFE is supporting organizing to raise the minimum wage and uplifting the stories of low wage workers with this new series.
