I’ll admit, there was a brief moment after Joe Biden won the presidency and Democrats won the Georgia Senate races where I didn’t think we’d need another season of The Wilderness, the podcast I started in 2018 about how the Democratic Party could start winning elections again.
That moment lasted about…a day.
The events of January 6, 2021 made clear that beating Donald Trump wouldn’t be enough to beat Trumpism – and that electing even the narrowest Democratic majority wouldn’t be enough to save democracy.
[So we’re back with another season, and another question: how do we keep our fragile, unwieldy, pro-democracy coalition together – in 2022, 2024, and beyond?]([link removed])
From now on, it’s not just the Democratic Party we need to keep out of the wilderness, but democracy itself. And that’s not just a job for Democratic politicians or strategists, but for all of us – as voters, activists, organizers, and citizens.
With less than two months to go until the midterms, it’s clear that Trump’s failed coup was just a practice run. In the country’s most competitive swing states, MAGA candidates who tried to overturn the last election could very well win offices that oversee the next one; offices that would give them the power to certify their state’s electoral votes in 2024 – or not.
This season, I talked to voters we absolutely need if we want to save democracy in 2022, 2024, and beyond – people who turned out to help defeat Trumpism in the last election, but aren’t entirely sure if they’ll do it again.
We’ll hear from Biden voters in Virginia who abandoned the Democratic Party in the last election. And Democrats in Pittsburgh who are fed up with national politics altogether.
I talked to Black voters in Atlanta, working-class Latinos in Las Vegas, and young people in Orange County, California about the issues that matter most to them.
But here’s the good news: These voters already came out to defeat Trumpism at the ballot box once. Our job is now to figure out how to make sure they do it again.
I hope you’ll tune in for these conversations, because as one of our most committed Vote Save America volunteers, these are the kinds of voters you’ll be texting, calling, and having face to face conversations with over the coming months, and you’ll want to hear what they have to say. New episodes spotlighting the unique challenges and opportunities in each of these regions drop every Monday starting today, wherever you listen to podcasts.

If we want to defeat the MAGA threat, our coalition in 2022 and beyond has to be as broad and diverse as it was in 2020 – and maybe even bigger. It won’t be easy, but over the last few years, this community has proven that a better world is possible.
Let’s do it again.
Jon
