** President Biden Signs the Inflation Reduction Act
------------------------------------------------------------
On August 16, the U.S. took a big step toward economic growth and combatting climate change when President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act. The $370 billion package will accelerate deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency, boost electric vehicle markets, and provide more vital support for Great Lakes coastal resilience. It provides $2 billion for the Rural Energy for America Program, boosting clean energy opportunities for small and medium-sized farmers, ranchers, and rural small businesses.

“Now the work begins to turn federal tax incentives into real climate solutions,” said ELPC’s Executive Director Howard Learner. “ELPC will work across the Midwest to effectively implement the ‘carrots’ in this important legislation while continuing our climate change solutions advocacy.”

ELPC staff are preparing for a double-whammy of oral arguments later this month in our fight to stop the unnecessary Cardinal-Hickory Creek Transmission Line through the scenic Driftless area of Southwest Wisconsin. On September 28th, the team will present oral arguments in person at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in the NEPA case against building through the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Then on September 29th, we will present Zoom oral arguments in Dane County Circuit Court on the merits of our challenge to the Wisconsin PSC’s decision to approve the transmission line.

Local, state, and federal leaders came together this summer in support of the Union Station Access Project. The project is expected to expand passenger capacity, reduce delays, and ease connections both to and through Chicago. As a hub of Metra’s suburban rail network and Amtrak’s intercity and nationwide rail network, Union Station is a critical link for improving train travel across the Midwest.
