We Have Sunshine Support!

Big news in my Sunshine Law case against the state!

On Friday, the Western District Court of Appeals accepted three amicus briefs from four organizations in support of my lawsuit:
* The ACLU of Missouri;
* The Missouri Press Association;
* The Freedom Center of Missouri; and
* The Sunshine and Government Accountability Project.

Why are all of these organizations on our side?

Because the freedom of Missouri’s press and our civil liberties are under attack.

Over a year ago, I asked our Governor for public records using Missouri’s Sunshine Law. These records were about dark money corruption in our government. But our government didn’t just give me the public records. Instead, they charged me over $3,600 for an attorney to review the records first.

That was illegal.

Imagine if the government could charge us attorney’s fees to access public records. Only the wealthy would be able to use the Sunshine Law. The public and the press would have few ways to hold our government accountable. We cannot let this happen.

Our Attorney General refused to do his job and enforce the Sunshine Law.

So I did.

I took the government to court. For the first time in our state’s history, a judge ruled that the government can charge attorney’s fees. We’re fighting back.

This isn’t a typical campaign for Attorney General. We can’t keep sitting back and doing typical things if we want to make Missouri work. The stakes are extremely high because our government is clearly not here for us. We need to fight for our democracy. We need to take back Missouri.

I’m proud to stand for our civil liberties and the freedom of our press, and to have these wonderful organizations in my corner.

I need you there with me too.
