Liz Willen Dear reader,

From choirs to Christmas carols and orchestras, music is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season, although I can live without “Grandma got run over by a reindeer.”

Music is hugely important in my household and should be part of every U.S. education. That’s why I’m excited to bring you Lillian Mongeau’s comprehensive look at music education, ([link removed]) produced in partnership with Oregon Public Broadcasting. The story contains heartening news: Some low-income districts are finding creative ways to provide music classes and equalize a playing field that favors wealthier districts.

Enjoy, and happy holidays!

Liz Willen, Editor

Special report
Our friends at The Trace, a national nonprofit newsroom, just published a new investigation on the booming school security industry. [school shooter training stopped me - makes it sound like they are training school shooters.] The report found that even as schools spend more money on active shooter drills, there is little evidence that the programs are effective. And districts have faced lawsuits claiming that children have suffered physical and psychological harm as a result.
