Why We Can't Afford to Lose the State Board of Ed or CU Regents

Schools, education, and teachers have been hot topics for the last couple of years. Remote learning exposed cracks in our system we didn't even know we had, and our Democratic majorities holding both the State Board of Education the CU Board of Regents have been working hard to address inequalities, teacher pay, and combating disinformation about Critical Race Theory.
It's imperative we hold our majorities in all of these races to ensure the children of Colorado are able to access a good education that allows them to critically think for themselves and make their positive choices.
We must work to support our teacher and protect parents rights.

It's Time for an Interim Committees Update
A number of committees meet during the interim months – May through December. These committees include the ongoing statutory year-round committees as well as the one-time interim committees created by the legislature to study issues and recommend legislation of timely and important issues. All committees are joint committees consisting of House and Senate members. Committees during the interim typically meet all day, covering a number of agenda items.

While a student in college, I was inspired to become involved in local politics and took a semester off of college to return to Northwest Colorado as a community organizer. In this work, I saw the value in working to improve your community. I knew I wanted to dedicate my career to public service and doing my part to make people's lives better.
Several years later I earned my law degree from the University of Colorado. Wanting to continue my work on behalf of our mountain communities, I became a Deputy District Attorney for Eagle County where I pursued justice for victims of crime and helped keep our communities safe.
My wife Sarah and I live in Avon with our son Teddy.
On November 6, 2018, the voters of Eagle and Routt Counties elected me by a margin of 60%-36% to be their State Representative. During the 2019 and 2020 legislative sessions I was proud to serve as the Chair of the House Rural Affairs & Agriculture Committee, and in 2021, I began service as the Chair of the House Business Affairs & Labor Committee as well as a member of the Agriculture & Water Committee and the Judiciary Committee.
During my time in the legislature, I have been the prime sponsor of 70 bills that have passed and become law. 97% of those bills received bipartisan support.
I have written and passed legislation that have lowered health care costs, capped the costs of prescription drugs, protected our water, promoted small businesses in rural Colorado, and made life easier for hardworking families in our mountain communities.
Since the pandemic hit Colorado in 2020, I've worked with Republicans and Democrats to support small businesses across Colorado, expand affordable health care, and help our economy recover.

Remembering Gary "Marty" M. Amble
1946 - 2022

Marty was a leader in political activism. With the Denver Democrats, especially House District 9, he worked enthusiastically on campaigns and other issues with his many like-minded friends. He was awarded the Frank Sullivan Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. He found relaxation as a member of the Sports and Social Connections group in Denver. With his friends there he enjoyed many activities including hiking, bowling, attending many special events, caroling, and parties. Marty loved the city life with all of its people, diversity, events and restaurants. He especially loved outdoor adventures and traveling. Some of his highlights include hiking Grand Canyon, AZ; Longs Peak, Co; Cloud Peak, Wy; and Black Elk Peak, SD.
Friendship Memorial Gatherings will take place in Denver, CO and Sioux Falls, SD at dates and places to be announced, and followed by internment at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to; Children’s Home Society [[link removed]] of Sioux Falls, SD, Historicorps, [[link removed]] and Center for Western Studies, Augustana University [[link removed]] , Sioux Falls, SD.

A Note from the Senior Initiative
Welcome to the Colorado Democratic Party Senior Initiative. The Initiative was founded in 2019 and meetings monthly on the 2nd Monday of each month (except for holidays).
Our goal to reach out to seniors the age of 55 years and older. (Of course younger than 55 are welcome to join) and to provide information about benefits and pending legislation at the Federal, State and local levels that affect the senior population.
Contrary to popular belief, the Social Security Trust fund is not depleted. Based on the 2022 Trust fund report, the Trust fund is fully funded until 2035 and then if no action is taken to improve the plan, benefits will decrease to 70% of the current benefit. At this time 65 million senior receive Social Security benefits. (Approximately 145,000 per congressional districts)
Currently there is a lot activity in Congress taking steps to protect and increase Social Security, Medicare and giving Medicare the authority the negotiate certain drug prices for Medicare recipients.
Congressman John Larsen (D-Connecticut) has been working on H.R. 5723 Social Security 211-A Sacred Trust. This legislation does a number of things:
1. Bump the benefit for current and new social security beneficiaries;
2. Protection against inflation (improves the COLA formula to better reflect costs
3. Protects low-income works (5 million seniors currently live below poverty level)
4. Improves benefits for widows and widowers in two income households
5. Repeals the Windfall Elimination provision (WEP) and Government Pension offset (GPO) helps teachers, fireman, state employees;
6. Ends waiting period for disability benefits, provides caregiver credits toward social security, extends dependent benefits for students to age 26 and part-time,
7. And the best yet to support Social Security: increases payroll tax to wages above $400,000 as the same rate of someone making $142,800 or less. Puts more money in the trust fund which extends solvency.
Co-Sponsors of this bill include Congresswoman DeGette, Congressman Neguse, Congressman Crow and Congressman Perlmutter.
The Senate companion bill is S 3071 by Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). Call Senator Bennet and Senator HIckenlooper to co-sponsor the Legislation in the Senate.
