Why We Can't Afford to Lose the State Board of Ed or CU Regents |
Schools, education, and teachers have been hot topics for the last couple of years. Remote learning exposed cracks in our system we didn't even know we had, and our Democratic majorities holding both the State Board of Education the CU Board of Regents have been working hard to address inequalities, teacher pay, and combating disinformation about Critical Race Theory.
It's imperative we hold our majorities in all of these races to ensure the children of Colorado are able to access a good education that allows them to critically think for themselves and make their positive choices.
We must work to support our teacher and protect parents rights. So what does the State Board of Ed and the CU Regents actually do? I'm glad you asked. 😀
The State Board of Education: The mission of the Colorado State Board of Education is to provide all of Colorado’s children equal access to quality, thorough, uniform, well-rounded educational opportunities in a safe and civil learning environment.
The Colorado State Board of Education is the governing board of the Colorado Department of Education and some of it's functions are: - Provides educational leadership for the state;
- Appoints the Commissioner of Education and the Director of State Board Relations;
- Employs personnel of the Department of Education;
- Approves the Department of Education budget;
- Makes rules, regulations, and policies that govern the Colorado Department of Education, public education including pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, adult education, and public libraries;
- Accredits public school districts;
- Facilitates the provision of library services to the citizens of Colorado through the State Library;
- AND MORE!
The CU Board of Regents:
The University of Colorado Board of Regents consists of nine members serving staggered six-year terms, one elected from each of Colorado's seven congressional districts and two from the state at large. The board is charged constitutionally with the general supervision of the university and the exclusive control and direction of all funds of and appropriations to the university, unless otherwise provided by law. They are currently focused on: - Diversity
- Affordability
- Serving the State
- Student and Faculty Achievement
-
Free speech and Viewpoint Diversity
- Research and Economic Growth
- Job Creation

The IRA Passes the Senate |
The past few weeks Dems have really been delivering. I mean REALLY! Here a list of all the good that has happened: 🌟Senate Inflation Reduction Act 🌟Congress passes CHIPS Plus 🌟Zawahiri mission 🌟Burn Pits (PACT Act) passes to protect our veterans 🌟Record job creation / 50-year low rate
🌟Gas prices below $3.99 at most ️ 🌟NATO expansion: Sweden and Finland 🌟 Exec Action on Repro Rights 🌟 Protecting Same-sex and interracial marriage 🌟 Protecting access to contraceptives And we won't stop there! Here are some great talking points and messages to elevate:
Inflation drops to zero as gas prices decline: Today, the July Consumer Price Index report showed that our economy had zero percent inflation last month. The stagnation was due in a large part due to the decline in gas prices, which have been falling for eight straight weeks. While this report is a step in the right direction, there’s more work to do, and that is why Democrats are working to pass the Inflation Reduction Act to lower health care, prescription drug, and energy costs.
Republicans are lying about the Inflation Reduction Act: Republicans are lying about the Inflation Reduction Act - but here’s the truth: Today three new fact checks confirmed that increased funding for the IRS will be used to go after billionaire tax cheats – not middle-class families. The Inflation Reduction Act will make sure big corporations and wealthy tax cheats finally pay what they owe - and families making below $400,000 won’t pay a dime more. Help us uplift these stories to push back on Republicans’ false claims:

I've served two terms as a state legislator and I'm proud of my record. So why am I running for Colorado State Senate now? New boundaries for Senate District 20 create an opportunity for me to continue to represent the mountain communities of Jefferson County while I work for new constituents in Lakewood and Littleton. I'm so excited to represent people as passionate as I am about issues that really matter to those of us who live here along the Front Range. Issues like wildfire mitigation and prevention. Protecting Colorado's environment. Enhancing mental and behavioral health systems. And strengthening democracy through information and access.
New friends, new colleagues, same mission – to bring people together to solve problems through collaboration and civil discourse, even when we might disagree. I will keep listening with an open mind about issues important to you and your ideas for resolving them. |

From practicing skiing under the lights of Howelsen Hill to hiking the beautiful trails in the Gore Range and the Flat Tops, and attending our excellent public schools, I was so lucky to grow up here.
Now I have the privilege of representing the supportive and resilient communities of Eagle and Routt Counties at the State Capitol where I am a bipartisan champion for rural Colorado.
Together, we are making progress on lowering health care costs, protecting our water, supporting rural small businesses, and lowering the cost of living for hardworking families.
While a student in college, I was inspired to become involved in local politics and took a semester off of college to return to Northwest Colorado as a community organizer. In this work, I saw the value in working to improve your community. I knew I wanted to dedicate my career to public service and doing my part to make people's lives better. Several years later I earned my law degree from the University of Colorado. Wanting to continue my work on behalf of our mountain communities, I became a Deputy District Attorney for Eagle County where I pursued justice for victims of crime and helped keep our communities safe.
My wife Sarah and I live in Avon with our son Teddy. |

On November 6, 2018, the voters of Eagle and Routt Counties elected me by a margin of 60%-36% to be their State Representative. During the 2019 and 2020 legislative sessions I was proud to serve as the Chair of the House Rural Affairs & Agriculture Committee, and in 2021, I began service as the Chair of the House Business Affairs & Labor Committee as well as a member of the Agriculture & Water Committee and the Judiciary Committee. During my time in the legislature, I have been the prime sponsor of 70 bills that have passed and become law. 97% of those bills received bipartisan support. I have written and passed legislation that have lowered health care costs, capped the costs of prescription drugs, protected our water, promoted small businesses in rural Colorado, and made life easier for hardworking families in our mountain communities. Since the pandemic hit Colorado in 2020, I've worked with Republicans and Democrats to support small businesses across Colorado, expand affordable health care, and help our economy recover. |

A Note from the Senior Initiative |
Welcome to the Colorado Democratic Party Senior Initiative. The Initiative was founded in 2019 and meetings monthly on the 2nd Monday of each month (except for holidays). Our goal to reach out to seniors the age of 55 years and older. (Of course younger than 55 are welcome to join) and to provide information about benefits and pending legislation at the Federal, State and local levels that affect the senior population. Contrary to popular belief, the Social Security Trust fund is not depleted. Based on the 2022 Trust fund report, the Trust fund is fully funded until 2035 and then if no action is taken to improve the plan, benefits will decrease to 70% of the current benefit. At this time 65 million senior receive Social Security benefits. (Approximately 145,000 per congressional districts) Currently there is a lot activity in Congress taking steps to protect and increase Social Security, Medicare and giving Medicare the authority the negotiate certain drug prices for Medicare recipients.
Congressman John Larsen (D-Connecticut) has been working on H.R. 5723 Social Security 211-A Sacred Trust. This legislation does a number of things: 1. Bump the benefit for current and new social security beneficiaries; 2. Protection against inflation (improves the COLA formula to better reflect costs 3. Protects low-income works (5 million seniors currently live below poverty level) 4. Improves benefits for widows and widowers in two income households
5. Repeals the Windfall Elimination provision (WEP) and Government Pension offset (GPO) helps teachers, fireman, state employees; 6. Ends waiting period for disability benefits, provides caregiver credits toward social security, extends dependent benefits for students to age 26 and part-time,
7. And the best yet to support Social Security: increases payroll tax to wages above $400,000 as the same rate of someone making $142,800 or less. Puts more money in the trust fund which extends solvency. Co-Sponsors of this bill include Congresswoman DeGette, Congressman Neguse, Congressman Crow and Congressman Perlmutter. The Senate companion bill is S 3071 by Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). Call Senator Bennet and Senator HIckenlooper to co-sponsor the Legislation in the Senate.
