Hi there,
We are approaching those lazy, blissful days of August where everything slows down and it really feels like summer. If you feel like kicking back urbanist style, make sure to mark your calendar with these upcoming opportunities.
Save the date!
Join us for a happy hour in Prince George's County [[link removed]]
Join GGWash on Thursday, August 11 from 5:30 - 7:30 at Denizens in Riverdale Park for one of several happy hours we are hosting across the region this summer. Come hang out with GGWash staff and meet other GGWash friends based in Prince George's County.
Meet fellow DC urbanists at a Ward 1.5 happy hour [[link removed]]
Civic engagement can be both rewarding and frustrating, but it should never be lonely. If you're looking to connect with other folks--especially in Wards 1 and 2--who think neighbors are nicer than neighborhood character and that cities should be for people, not for cars, come out on Sunday August 14 at 3pm for a happy hour at Exiles!
Webinar: Extreme Heat: Adaptation strategies for cities in a changing climate [[link removed]]
Recent heat waves across the globe have smashed temperature records and endangered millions in what is likely to be one of the cooler summers in our lifetimes; it is apparent that cities must implement better cooling strategies. Join GGWash on Wednesday, August 24 from 12:00-1:00 PM for a conversation with local experts about how cities need to adapt to climate change in order to equitably mitigate the impacts of extreme heat.

B ecome a Breakfast Links Curator [[link removed]]
We're still looking for a Breakfast Links Curator to help out on Thursdays! These superstar volunteers kickstart each day at GGWash, working with our editors to select six to 10 engaging stories that provide a snapshot of recent local urbanist news.
What does it take to run for ANC? [[link removed]]
The deadline to register to file to run for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner [[link removed]] seats in the District is next Wed., Aug. 10, at 5 p.m. So, there's still time to pick up paperwork [[link removed]] from the Board of Elections and collect at least 25 signatures from your neighbors in your single-member district to qualify as a candidate (look up your SMD here [[link removed]] ). For more information on running and serving as a commissioner, watch our training [[link removed]] ! Many seats will likely not have a declared candidate after Aug. 10—see all declared candidates here [[link removed]] , or check openanc.org [[link removed]] —meaning you may have the opportunity to run as a write-in candidate. If your SMD doesn't have a candidate by the end of next week, consider running as a write-in if you meet the requirements [[link removed]] , and stay tuned from an email from us in the next couple of weeks with more details on how to do so.
Keep Upper Beach Drive closed to cars [[link removed]]
The National Park Service recently announced [[link removed]] it would be reopening upper Beach Drive to cars seasonally, citing concerns that the lack of cars made it easier for people and their dogs to access fragile parts of the park, and that closing the part of the park to cars made it harder for people to commute by driving. NPS is encouraging folks to review the Environmental Assessment [[link removed]] (check out pages 6-9 to learn what was evaluated) and share comments [[link removed]] through August 11.
[[link removed]] Thank you so much for all you do for our region!
All the best,
Kate Jentoft-Herr
