What does it take to run for ANC?
The deadline to register to file to run for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner seats in the District is next Wed., Aug. 10, at 5 p.m. So, there's still time to pick up paperwork from the Board of Elections and collect at least 25 signatures from your neighbors in your single-member district to qualify as a candidate (look up your SMD here). For more information on running and serving as a commissioner, watch our training! Many seats will likely not have a declared candidate after Aug. 10—see all declared candidates here, or check openanc.org—meaning you may have the opportunity to run as a write-in candidate. If your SMD doesn't have a candidate by the end of next week, consider running as a write-in if you meet the requirements, and stay tuned from an email from us in the next couple of weeks with more details on how to do so.
Keep Upper Beach Drive closed to cars
The National Park Service recently announced it would be reopening upper Beach Drive to cars seasonally, citing concerns that the lack of cars made it easier for people and their dogs to access fragile parts of the park, and that closing the part of the park to cars made it harder for people to commute by driving. NPS is encouraging folks to review the Environmental Assessment (check out pages 6-9 to learn what was evaluated) and share comments through August 11.
