Wednesday Hearing on Electoral Count Act Reform
On July 20, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) introduced S. 4573, the long-awaited proposal to reform the antiquated Electoral Count Act (ECA). The Senate Rules Committee will hold a hearing on the need to reform this law on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 10:30 a.m. ET. [link removed]

New Jersey Enacts Multiple New Election Laws
On Thursday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed a package of seven election bills into law. While the bills make several welcome changes to New Jersey elections, they represent mostly tweaks of existing laws rather than sweeping changes.

Thanks to the new laws, election officials will be able to count mail-in ballots before Election Day and voters will be able to request ballots via an online portal. One provision that wasn’t included? Same-day registration, which faced opposition from the state Senate President. Find out more here. [link removed]

Nevada Voter ID Ballot Initiative Blocked From 2022 Ballot
On Friday, a Nevada state court blocked a conservative group’s ballot initiative from appearing on the ballot this fall. The proposal would have created a photo ID requirement for in-person voting. Find out about the ruling here. [link removed]

USPS Announces New Election Division To Handle Mail-in Ballots
On Thursday, the United States Postal Service announced a new division to handle election mail and effectively deliver mail-in ballots in advance of the midterm elections this November. The division will help the service better respond to issues with election mail. Read more here. [link removed]
